Our comprehensive Home Electrical Safety Inspection Checklist walks you through every room in your home with a detailed assessment guide. From checking your electrical panel's condition to verifying GFCI protection in bathrooms and kitchens, this printable checklist helps Ontario homeowners identify potential electrical hazards before they become emergencies. Based on the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) 29th Edition requirements and written by licensed electricians with over 35 years of experience.
Check your main electrical panel for signs of damage, corrosion, or tripped breakers. Verify that all breakers are properly labeled and that the panel has at least 36 inches of clearance.
Verify GFCI protection on all counter-height outlets. Test GFCI outlets using the built-in test/reset buttons. Check for proper spacing — outlets should be no more than 0.9m apart along countertops (per OESC Rule 26-712).
Confirm GFCI protection on all bathroom outlets. Check exhaust fan operation and ensure light fixtures are rated for damp locations.
Check for AFCI-protected circuits in bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, and other habitable areas (expanded requirement under OESC 29th Edition). Test smoke and CO detectors, verify outlet and switch condition, and look for any discoloration around outlets.
Ensure proper panel clearance, check sump pump and laundry circuits, verify grounding connections, and look for any exposed wiring.
